A Mereological Approach to Representing Spatial Vagueness*

چکیده
Spatial reasoning is crucial in many AI application domains, such as robotics, qualitative and naive physics, and some types of planning . Qualitative reasoning is often required ; and in many of these cases, uncertainty or imprecision about the spatial extent of particular entities has to be represented and coped with . This paper develops an axiomatisation of a relation of `crisping' (reducing imprecision or vagueness) between pairs of `vague' spatial regions : those with indeterminate boundaries . This axiomatisation is then related to the previously developed 'eggyolk' representation of vagueness, originally designed by (Lehmann and Cohn 1994) for database applications, then applied to expressing spatial vagueness by (Cohn and Gotts 1994) .

متن کاملمدلسازی روابط توپولوژیک سه بعدی فازی در محیط GIS
Nowadays, geospatial information systems (GIS) are widely used to solve different spatial problems based on various types of fundamental data: spatial, temporal, attribute and topological relations. Topological relations are the most important part of GIS which distinguish it from the other kinds of information technologies. One of the important mechanisms for representing topological relations...
متن کاملSpatial Locations via Morpho-Mereology
We present a calculus for representing and reasoning about the location of rigid objects which may move within some region (we will speak ofmobile parts). The calculus has both a mereological primitive and a morphological one, hence the title of the paper. We present an axiomatisation for congruence, our chosen morphological primitive, define the notion of mobile part, describe a subset of morp...
متن کاملMereological Essentialism and Mereological Inessentialism
Mereological essentialists argue that mereological summations cannot change their parts. Mereological inessentialists argue that mereological summations can change some or all of their parts. In this paper I articulate and defend a position called Moderate Mereological Inessentialism, according to which certain mereological summations can change some, but not all, of their parts. Persistent mer...
متن کاملFuzzy region connection calculus: Representing vague topological information
Qualitative spatial information plays a key role in many applications. While it is well-recognized that all but a few of these applications deal with spatial information that is affected by vagueness, relatively little work has been done on modelling this vagueness in such a way that spatial reasoning can still be performed. This paper presents a general approach to represent vague topological ...
